The various units of the Oulu Polytechnic offer training
through a total of 30 educational programmes. The size of the Polytechnic’s
degree programme is 210–270 credits and lasts 3.5–4.5 years.
In addition to basic and professional, and optional studies, the degree
programme of the Polytechnic includes at least half a year of practical
working experience and the writing of a technical article. The curriculum
of the studies programme includes those study units which are necessary
for completing the degree. The Studies Guide presents the degree requirements
for new students for the entire study period. The standardised study programme
which appears in the Studies Guide can be tailored to become a personal
study plan.
The athlete is offered a unit of optional studies worth 15 credits, which
can be completed over a four-year study period as portfolio work. The Sports
Academy’s Oulu Polytechnic (OAMK) liaison person advises the student
and directs the implementation of the study sections. In addition to this
liaison person there is a support person (Director of Studies) in every
OAMK unit who specialises in challenges facing athletes, and who assists
in the preparation of the HOVS if there are problems.
Students’ experiences
“The year-round nature of training for my sport brings additional
challenges to planning the studies. Absences occur inevitably on account
of travelling to matches or possible attendance at training camps for the
national team. The attitude of most of the teachers is positive when I ask
the teachers in good time, and an agreement is made about how to compensate
for absences from the studies. There is also a point of contact between
playing and studying in the preparation for exams. A player cannot train
hard for a match the night before he is due to play. The same is true of
school. For such demanding tasks to be done properly, it is not sufficient
simply to swat up for exams the night before.
